Deep Impact colt fetches top price at Japan weanling sale
A colt from the first crop of two-time Japanese Horse of the Year Deep Impact sold for $2,056,074 (220,000,000 yen) on Tuesday to top the first of two weanling sessions of the Japan Racing Horse Association’s July select sale at Northern Horse Park on Japan’s island of Hokkaido.
Takaya Shimakawa purchased the bay colt, who was consigned by Northern Farm. He is out of 1995 Japanese champion two-year-old filly Biwa Heidi, by Caerleon. Biwa Heidi has produced four winners from as many starters, including Admire Japan and Admire Aura, both group stakes winners in Japan.
Darley Japan went to $981,308 to secure a Tanino Gimlet filly, a full sister to 2006 champion two-year-old filly Vodka.
Consigned by Country Farm, the bay filly is out of the winning Rousillon mare Tanino Sister. Vodka became the first filly 64 years to win Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby) when she captured the race last year.
The sale company reported 124 or 165 weanlings offered as sold for total receipts of $41,789,719, an average of $337,014. The buy-back rate was 24.8%.
The sale resumes on Wednesday with the final weanling session.
