Quality Road close to first breeze for Pletcher

Grade 1 winner and former classic hopeful Quality Road, who has been sidelined foot problems, has been galloping regularly and might breeze next week at Belmont Park.

The three-year-old Elusive Quality colt, who was treated for two quarter cracks this spring, is being pointed to the $500,000 Jim Dandy Stakes (G2) on August 1 at Saratoga Race Course.

“He’s fairly close to a breeze, probably some time next week or so,” said trainer Todd Pletcher, who took over the training of the colt when owner Edward P. Evans transferred him from trainer Jimmy Jerkens in June. “We’ve been working around a rain schedule, and he should be ready with a few more gallops on a good track.”

Quality Road was one of the prerace favorites for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) following victories in the Florida Derby Presented by BlackBerry (G1) on March 28 (video) and the Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2) on February 28 (video).

Quality Road, however, developed a quarter crack on his right front foot and on April 27 was removed from consideration for the Kentucky Derby. He did not return to the work tab until June 8, when he breezed three furlongs in :38.83 at Belmont Park. He was transferred to Pletcher a week later.
