Ruffian Handicap (G1) winner Tough Tiz’s Sis was retired by owners Karl Watson and Paul Weitman and trainer Bob Baffert after suffering a condylar fracture during a workout on Saturday.
The multiple Grade 1 winner was being pointed to the Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic (G1) on October 24 at the Oak Tree meeting at Santa Anita Park.
“Dr. [Patricia] Hogan [V.M.D, of the New Jersey Equine Center] will put in a screw,” said Tonja Terranova, assistant to trainer Bob Baffert. “She is going to be fine.”
Tough Tiz’s Sis won eight of 20 career starts, including six stakes victories, and amassed $903,792 in purse earnings in three seasons.
In 2007, the Tiznow filly won the Lady’s Secret Stakes (G1) and Hollywood Breeders’ Cup Oaks (G2). This year she won the Hawthorne Handicap (G3) and Harry W. Henson Handicap in addition to the Ruffian on September 6 in her final start.
Bred in Kentucky by Gary Tussey, Tough Tiz’s Sis is out of stakes-placed winner Leaseholder, by Taylor’s Falls.
