Cosmonaut appeared poised to win the $227,400 River City Handicap (G2) on Friday at Churchill Downs, but was overtaken by a determined drive from Zayat Stables' Thorn Song, who surged into contention in the final furlong to win the 1 1/8-mile race by a half-length.

Winning rider Kent Desormeaux took Thorn Song in hand early, shifting him four wide to chase early leader Ra Der Dean. As Grade 3 winner Cosmonaut took the lead on the backstretch, Desormeaux angled the four-year-old Unbridled's Song colt seven wide while 1.10-to-1 favorite Cosmonaut ran a half-mile in :50.05 and six furlongs in 1:14.61 on Churchill's yielding turf course.

Never more than one length behind the leader at each point of call, Thorn Song raced four wide entering the far turn, making steady advances on Cosmonaut, finally putting that opponent away in the final strides to prevail in 1:51.37, his first career graded stakes win.

Grade 1 winner Gun Salute finished third, two lengths behind Cosmonaut.

Trained by Dale Romans, Thorn Song entered the River City off a runner-up finish in his stakes debut, the 1 1/8-mile Knickerbocker Handicap on October 28 at Aqueduct. He has won four of 13 starts and has earned $312,110.

Bred by Pinnacle Racing and Taylor Made Farm, Thorn Song is out of the Storm Bird mare Festal.
