Equine insurance agent Bill Carl dies


William “Bill” Allen Carl, an insurance agent who specialized in equine insurance, died on Monday. He was 78.

Carl founded Old Colony Insurance Service Inc. in 1964, focusing on equine insurance. Carl was also a respected horseman, establishing the racing and breeding operation Wakefield Farm in the 1970s.

A graduate of the University of Kentucky, Carl was a member of the Keeneland Club as well as the Thoroughbred Club and enjoyed the races and sales at the Lexington track.

He is survived by his wife, Suzanne, and children, Molly Thomas, Betsey Strong, Sarah Monell, and Dr. Jennifer Carl-Howard, D.V.M.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at the Second Presbyterian Church at 460 E. Main Street in Lexington. Visitation will be from 4-6 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday at Milward-Broadway Funeral Home.
