Live racing canceled Sunday at Belmont
The last day of Belmont Park’s spring/summer live race meeting was canceled on Sunday, one day after a transformer fire in the basement under the Elmont, New York, track’s grandstand.
The fire on Saturday morning forced the temporary evacuation of the track, which re-opened at about 11:15 a.m. EDT. The ten-race card was run with restricted fan access to the clubhouse.
On Sunday, however, electricity had not been fully restored to provide air conditioning to key areas of the track, including the jockeys’ room, which is located in the track basement and has no windows to provide ventilation.
That issue and other intermittent electrical problems forced track officials to cancel Sunday’s live racing.
The transformer replacement and other repairs will be done while racing shifts to Saratoga Race Course for its 36-day live meeting, which begins on Wednesday.
