Thoroughbred standouts Secretariat and Barbaro are depicted together on a new print that will benefit the fight against laminitis, the painful hoof disease that ended both of their lives.
Titled “Memories of Greatness,” the portraits were produced by equine artist Jaime Corum and capture the nobility and courage of 1973 Triple Crown winner Secretariat and 2006 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) winner Barbaro.
The prints will be unveiled at Saratoga Race Course on August 4.
Meadow Stables’s Penny Chenery and Lael Stables’s Roy and Gretchen Jackson, the connections for Secretariat and Barbaro, respectively, sanctioned the poster and print set to benefit the Laminitis Fund at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine’s New Bolton Center.
“The New Bolton Center is making some exciting headway in its laminitis research, and its efforts should be widely supported throughout the equine community,” Chenery said. “These horses have given so much of themselves, and we owe it to them to find a cure for this disease.”
“Roy and I are so honored to have this opportunity to give back to the New Bolton Center,” Gretchen Jackson said. “Jaime’s incredible portraits of Secretariat and Barbaro capture the noble spirits that made them both such endearing champions.”
Memories of Greatness will be available for purchase on August 4-5 at the Secretariat.com booth, adjacent to the jockey silks display. The poster, available for $30, displays both horses together, united in one 16-by-20 inch piece.
The print set, limited to 500 produced and available for $300, features the horses separately, along with the artistic marks representing the colors of the silks they carried.
Hand-numbered and signed by the artist and connections of the horses, each print measures 16-by-24 inches. Both are available through Secretariat.com, in conjunction with publisher Moonlight Press.
Chenery, the Jacksons and Corum will sign items at the Secretariat booth from 11 a.m. EDT to noon on August 4. On August 5 beginning at noon, they will be available for signings at the At the Rail Pavilion luncheon, an annual fund-raiser for the New Bolton Center hosted by Saratoga.
The luncheon is a ticketed event, and tickets must be purchased in advance at $225 per person. For more information, contact Patricia Hall at (610) 925-6500 or or e-mail her at phall@vet.upenn.edu.
