Connections of Mastercraftsman may opt for Dirt Mile
Boylesports.com Irish Two Thousand Guineas (Ire-G1) winner Mastercraftsman may target the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (G1) rather than the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) on November 7 at the Oak Tree at Santa Anita Park meeting.
Trainer Aidan O’Brien said the Danehill Dancer colt was pre-entered in both races on Monday, with the Dirt Mile as the stated preference.
“However we are allowed to change preferences closer to the race,” O’Brien told England’s Press Association.
Pre-entries for the 14 Breeders’ Cup races were due on Monday. Regular entries will be taken on November 3.
Mastercraftsman scored by five lengths in the Diamond Stakes (Ire-G3) on October 2 at Dundalk in his first start on a synthetic surface. He won the Irish Two Thousand Guineas and St. James’s Palace Stakes (Eng-G1) in consecutive starts at a mile this year.
O’Brien’s other candidates are Man of Iron in the Breeders’ Cup Marathon, Alfred Nobel and Beethoven in the Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1), Lillie Langtry in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, and Viscount Nelson in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G2).
