Cima de Triomphe lands Italian Derby

by Myra Lewyn

Scuderia Cocktail’s Cima de Triomphe added a classic victory to his record on Sunday by capturing the $1,549,848 Derby Italiano (Ity-G1) at Capanelle Racecourse in Rome.

Jockey Silvano Mulas guided the Irish-bred Galileo (Ire) colt to a half-length victory over Permesso.

Based in Milan at Grizzetti Galoppo, Cima de Triomphe covered the Derby’s 2,200 meters (10.94 furlongs) in 2:14.60 on turf rated as good.

Papetti finished another length back in the third in the 18-horse field. Trainer Peter Chapple-Hyam’s highly regarded Bouguereau finished seventh.

Cima de Triomphe won a stakes in Milan at San Siro Racecourse on April 19.

Bred by Sofim, Cima de Triomphe is out of the Danehill mare Sopran Londa (Ire), who won the 1998 Premio Regina Elena (Ity-G2) (Italian One Thousand Guineas).
