Champ Laila first winner for freshman sire Champali

Champ Laila rallied four wide on the turn, opened a head lead in early stretch, and posted a five-length win in the seventh race on Friday at Turfway Park to become the first winner for multiple Grade 3 winner and freshman sire Champali.

Trained by Greg Foley for owner Golden Shamrock Stable, Champ Laila won the 5 1/2-furlong maiden special weight race in 1:05.91 on Turfway’s synthetic Polytrack surface. The two-year-old filly is out of the winning Bet Big mare Valid Deduction, a half sister to multiple Grade 1 winner Val’s Prince.

Eight-year-old Champali stood the 2008 season for $7,500 at Glencrest Farm in Midway, Kentucky. A Glitterman horse out of the winning Dixieland Band mare Radioactivity, Champali is a full brother to multiple stakes winner Drexel Monorail. He has 58 two-year-olds in his first crop.

Foley also trained Champali, who concluded his three-year racing career in 2004 with $1,073,794 in purse earnings and 11 wins in 22 starts for owner Lloyd Madison Farms IV. The chestnut horse earned two of his graded stakes wins at Churchill Downs, capturing 2002 Iroquois Stakes (G3) and the ’04 Aristides Breeders’ Cup Handicap (G3).

Champali also won the ’04 Smile Sprint Handicap (G3) at Calder Race Course and the ’04 Phoenix Breeders’ Cup Stakes (G3) at Keeneland Race Course.
